What Is An Operating System?
We all know that Windows, Linux, OS/2, Unix, etc are Operating Systems.. but how do you define them concretely?
Is it a set of drivers? Is it a platform to run applications? Is it just a set of applications?
I remember the OS's teacher trying to answer this question the first day of classes... but he couldn't find the right answer.
Facebook has acquired Parakey, a company that promote themselves as a Web Operating System..
So, this question came to my mind again: is Parakey really an Operating System? What do you think?
But, who cares? I am sure that Facebook has paid it as if they were ;)

But, as far as now, Parakey's web OS needs a desktop OS to run, don't it? That seems to "throwback" the web OS idea...
You are right in one thing: we should start defining OS concept before starting a discussion...
But yes, if they want to qualify as an OS for me, it should be there when I turn on my computer ;)
Anyway, the idea is interesting enough, if you can do everything web-side, why not the OS?
You can just install a proxy in your desktop and delagate all your task in an auto-updated, secure, storage-unlimited, open-source and web OS...
Obviously, I think it sounds good for those places with great internet bandwidth. I am not waiting to see it in the third world.
By the way, some years ago, I listened the rumor about the "super secret Google OS" but then, nothing came out...
So.. can really Facebook take the place against Microsoft? as was asked in TechCruch...
Facebook vs. Microsoft... Sounds a long-term run not only involving Facebook, but also lots (all?) sotware houses... if i'll have a web OS, i also want my CAD-tools, my games, my SAP-frontend???, my IDEs... all web! I also want Himalia runtime for web! ;)
I really don't see such a change without Microsoft support (much less, against Microsoft) Be sure when webOS arrives to home PC OS market, Microsoft will be there.
Perhaps i face the situation in the wide scenario of everybody turning on their computers at home and acceding their webOS... Facebook's strategy sure would be very different (a Blue Ocean one?)
